Watch the webinar

Presented by Trinity College London academic experts, the series is aimed at English language teachers looking to continue their professional development, particularly those preparing learners for ISE or GESE. This webinar was the fourth in series and focussed on Teacher Education in ELT in particular. During the webinar, Sinead Laffan and Rachael Clarke played and discussed video clips sent in by English teachers and trainers from around the world as part of our Future A-Z of ELT challenge.

The clips we received covered a variety of topics related to Teacher Education, ranging from Flipped training courses to changes to way we conduct lesson Observations.  Attendees also shared some great examples of resources they're using with their learners.

F is for Flipped training

Thanks to Alex for sharing his thoughts on Flipped training courses. A flipped classroom reverses the traditional model of a classroom, focusing time in class on student understanding rather than on lecture. Developments in technology have made it easier and easier to create engaging online content that can be used in place of traditional classroom input.

T is for Teach not Test

Cathy Taylor shared her thoughts on the importance of training teachers to teach reading and listening skills not just practice/test them.  After watching the clip, Sinead and Rachael discussed the problems teachers can encounter if their initial teacher training courses don't focus on skills development in enough detail. O is for Observations

Yvert sent us a clip in advance of his poster presentation at this Future of ELT 2019. He talked about the importance of collaborative observations and the challenges in balancing development of the a teacher and quality control for the organisation they work in. This led to some really interesting examples of innovative ways to facilitate peer observation from Sinead, including one example with trainees observing a peer teach a lesson via a recordings, allowing their trainer to make comments in real time to the group, rather than waiting till after the class had finished.
