Watch the webinar

Presented by Trinity College London academic experts, the series is aimed at English language teachers looking to continue their professional development, particularly those preparing learners for ISE or GESE. This webinar was the third in series and focussed on Technology in particular. During the webinar, Ben and Gwilym played and discussed video clips sent in by English teachers and trainers from around the world as part of our Future A-Z of ELT challenge.

The clips we received covered a variety of topics related to technology, ranging from Virtual Reality to Digital Literacy.  Attendees also shared some great examples of resources they're using with their learners, which you can find below

V is for Virtual Reality

Thanks to Tom for sharing his thoughts on how Virtual Reality will impact on the English-teaching world. Ben and Gwilym talked about how Google 360, Oculus Go, Google Cardboard can be used with English language learners, touching on some of the issues teachers could face using it. One teacher in Mexico shared their experiences using Nintendo Wii with their learners - sounds fun!

D is for Digital Literacy

Ben and Gwilym discussed various aspects of digital literacy, such a recognising fake news, agreeing that teachers have their work cut out trying to do our best to support learners with things we might still be learning ourselves!

Gwilym suggested a good starting point with Fake News is raising awareness of red flags when looking at a source, such as excessive use of capitals and punctuation, sourcing, unusual URLS, too many adjectives, emotive language etc. He also suggested using sites like 'the onion' to contrast a real news story with an exaggerated fake one!

S is for Synchronous Online Learning

Renata talked about the massive potential of synchronous online learning. Gwilym and Ben shared lots of examples of ways they are already using platforms like Adobe Connect, Jam Board and Big Blue Button to incorporate more even more interactivity than in a face-to-face classroom. Look out for more from Future of ELT plenary speaker Renata later in the series - she'll be joining us to talk more about her plenary.
