Presented by Trinity College London academic experts, the series is aimed at English language teachers looking to continue their professional development, particularly those preparing learners for ISE or GESE. This webinar was the second in series and focussed on English for Academic Purposes in particular. During the webinar, Tom and Martin played and discussed video clips sent in by English teachers and trainers from around the world as part of our Future A-Z of ELT challenge.
The clips we received covered a variety of topics relevant to teachers of English for Academic Purposes ranging from Translanguaging to using Corpora with learners. Attendees also shared some great examples of activities they use in class, including an interesting suggestion for using Disney movies in class.
Tom and Martin discussed the impact that having to work only in English can have on a learner in an academic context. They also shared ways they incorporate their learners L1 into their classes.
Lucy got us us thinking about how tricky it can be balancing the need to introduce the educational context your learners will be working in, and adapting your teaching to cater for the diverse range of educational backgrounds your EAP learners may have.
Kezzie listed several benefits to using corpora with learners in an EAP context, but the one Martin and Tom picked up on most was the fact that they can help to promote learner autonomy.
