Trinity College London is offering a free one-hour webinar  aimed at primary and secondary school music teachers, heads of department, head teachers, peripatetic teachers and music leaders, and parents and carers.

The webinar covers:

• Music and child development in Primary schools and how cuts to music and the arts can affect the wellbeing of children
• Music minds – empowering teenagers to use music as a coping strategy and the impact of music on young people’s mental health
• A number of pioneering programmes in the UK which are empowering young people to replace negative coping behaviours with music
• How Arts Award is a flexible, accessible qualification with demonstrable evidence proving that it has a positive impact on young peoples’ education and life experience
• The wider positive impact of music in schools and how Arts Award can play a supporting role

The webinar is hosted by our Music Education Hubs Associate, Ruth Jones, along with:

Jimmy Rotheram, musician and Music Coordinator at Feversham Primary Academy and Anita Holford who is a freelance writer and communications practitioner, specialising in helping music and arts organisations to communicate the value and impact of what they do.

Presenter biographies

Jimmy Rotheram has seen first-hand how using inclusive, child-developmental approaches to music education can transform schools. After introducing up to 6 hours of music a week for every child, Feversham went from Special Measures to one of the top 10% of schools in the country for pupil progress. This led to a feature in the Guardian which attracted over 250,000 global shares.

Anita Holford runs the musiceducationworks website and is also part of the senior management team for a small community music charity The Music Works, which specialises in working with young people in challenging circumstances. Her areas of special interest are inclusion/social justice, looked-after children, music and mental health, and impact evaluation.
